Ep 288 December 2023 Roundup
It’s the beginning of December, so that means I get to chat with my friend Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com. This month Ellen and I chat about the two podcasts I did with Caleigh McAulay of Celiac Canada about current myths surrounding both celiac disease and the gluten free diet. Ellen received lots of response when she posted about this topic. As well we talk about the recent national conference from Celiac Canada and some of the new things we learned. We discussed wheat starch, whether it’s a concern or not, and note some supporting information from Selena De Vries. I have a great Christmas gift idea from Robyn’s gluten free baking courses.
Dr. Diana Mager from the University of Alberta is putting out a call to parents of celiac children to fill in an online survey for their new study. The link, QR code and information are below.

Ep 287 Gluten Free Cooking Tips with Cinde
On this episode of the podcast I speak with Cinde Little – The Everyday Gluten Free Gourmet. You can find her along with her recipe posts at everydayglutenfreegourmet.ca. Cinde and I talked about how to approach cooking gluten free meals. Cinde gives lots of tips, and they may be something you’ve already found out and started doing for yourself, but likely, you’ll learn something, as I always do when I speak with Cinde.
Here are Cinde’s notes on the recipes she mentioned during the podcast –
In this post for Salad Rolls you can learn the difference between fish sauce, the essential ingredient for Thai and Vietnamese cooking, and the vinegar based salad roll dipping sauce you’re probably familiar with. You’ll also find a handful of other recipes that use this dipping sauce, I hope you’ll try some!
In this post, A Gluten Free Asian Pantry, I talk about many ingredients I use for cooking Asian dishes.
A recipe for gluten free Worcestershire Sauce.
In this post for White Sauce you’ll find links to all the recipes I make with the basic white sauce recipe. Some call for a different kinds of cheese to be added and some don’t but they’re all delicious.
More Everyday Meals on a Gluten Free Diet: In this post I talk about finding your cooking style, how to get more variety in your gluten free diet and more ideas for stress free everyday meals. You can also download my free e-book here.
In this recipe for Grilled Flank Steak with Chipotle Honey Sauce I talk about my Prep Once, Cook Twice strategy for preparing enough meat to freeze for a second meal.
Here are 2 posts with tips for success in the kitchen: Organize for Success with Labeling and Organize for Success with Mason Jars.
Also, I referred to these 3 recipes that all use Nuoc Cham sauce in them.Sue’s Websites and Social Media –

Ep 286 Celiac Myths Pt 2
As a follow up to the podcast episode #283 Celiac Myths Part 1, I continue my conversation with Registered Dietician Cayleigh McAulay from Celiac Canada to debunk myths around the gluten free diet. We’ve all heard the “you can have just a little bit, what harm could it do” or “don’t worry when you travel to Europe, wheat is different there and it won’t cause you any symptoms”. Some myths we’d like to believe, or at least not question, but it’s important to stop mis-information in it’s tracks and find out what science tells us. Cayleigh also directs us to resources from Celiac Canada.

Ep 285 November 2023 Roundup
It’s the beginning of November and that means I get to chat with my friend Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com about articles and studies she has brought to our attention over the past month.
Ellen and I talk about a recent study that shows an increase in women’s reproductive issues in the celiac population compared to the general female population. We also look at a presentation from the University of Chicago about DH and I, for one learned, some new facts about DH and how it relates to celiac disease.
We chat about the inconvenience of asking questions in a restaurant and if this explains why some people takes risks and chances. Ellen also brought us a very interesting webinar from Europe regarding questions to do with the new forms of biodegradable tableware that we are seeing in takeout containers and from food trucks. Is it safe? How safe?

Ep 284 Come Cruising Totally Gluten Free
If you’ve listened to the podcast for a while, you’ll know that I enjoy cruising and I’ve had great success eating a wide variety of gluten free foods onboard. My cruises have been on the large ocean liners. This week I’m speaking to Dianna from Expedia Cruises. Dianna herself is celiac and she’s organizing this cruise for April 2025. Expedia has contracted with AMA Waterways to ensure that there will be no gluten anywhere onboard. Sounds like a bit of dream! Then we look at the cruise itself, on the Danube, beautiful. The cruise is priced to include excursions, wi-fi, drinks, pretty much everything you might want. There is urgency here as Dianna must sell the staterooms by the end of November. Expedia Cruises & AMA Waterways is a sponsor of Celiac Canada to benefit their educational and advocacy programs. Both Dianna and I will be joining the cruise! Open the link to find out more. As Dianna says – SEE YOU ONBOARD!

Ep 283 Celiac Myths Pt 1
Like you, I often look up resources online for information on celiac disease. Sometimes, I start to go down a rabbit hole that includes social media posts including videos (which can be more convincing than just words). After being involved with Celiac Canada for more than 25 years and relying on information from them, I’m in a pretty good position to decide whether information is correct and legitimate, or if it’s maybe wishful thinking, or just wrong. I thought it was a good time to bring many of these myths to the podcast. I enlisted Registered Dietician Cayleigh McAulay from Celiac Canada to help me go over myths that have attracted our attention. Cayleigh is often the person who answers queries or Celiac Canada, so I’m confident she’s heard it all.
The myths Cayleigh and I discuss for this episode are regarding Celiac Disease –
- Celiac disease is an allergy.
- Celiac disease is rare.
- Celiac disease is a childhood disease.
- Celiac disease can be outgrown / is curable.
- Celiac disease is easy to recognize.
- If you have the celiac genes, you must have celiac disease.
- Celiac disease only causes digestive issues.
Cayleigh and I will be following up in the next few weeks with Myths Part 2, covering mis-information around gluten and the gluten free diet.

Ep 282 Belly Magazine
When I was recently at Gluten Free Fest, I met a very interesting woman who is a nutritionist, she’s celiac, and she’s publishing a new magazine. If that isn’t enough Jennifer Heard has a unique and interesting diagnosis story, as well as a roundabout story of how she landed with Belly Magazine.
You can signup to read the magazine at mybellyhurts.ca. You can find out more about Jenn’s Nutritionist practice at https://www.naturaljenn.com/. You can contact Jenn if you’d like to discuss a contribution to the magazine at jenn@dietaryinstitute.com.

Ep 281 Robyn Bakes Gluten Free
I always find it interesting when I meet someone in person who I’ve (in my own mind) “met” online. For a long time now, I’ve found the Instagram feed from Robyn’s Gluten Free Baking Courses fun and full of amazing photos of her baking. I’ve been fortunate to meet Robyn at several events over the past few years. She always shows up in her 50’s housewife blue polka dot dress – easy to spot in a crowd. I suppose with my recording gear, I’m easy to spot too.
I’ve recorded short chats with Robyn at these events, but have been waiting for the right time to sit down with her to find out her story, why she concentrates on gluten free baking, and how she decided to sell her baking courses. One baker to another, we could have talked on and on. If you’ve been hesitant to try your hand at gluten free baking, now might be the best time. The coupon code Robyn gave us was ccpodcast which will get you 10% off any course (just apply the code at checkout).
Thanks Robyn!

Ep 280 October 2023 Roundup
It’s the beginning of October and my opportunity to speak with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com to chat about the articles she has brought to our attention over the past month.
Ellen published an article about the delay in reading celiac diagnostic blood tests for children in Montreal. This was truly concerning. The family highlighted had introduced gluten back into their daughter’s diet as a gluten challenge prior to testing. When the tests were not processed and had to be disposed of to be re-done, the family was understandably angry. This situation, which is now being dealt with effected almost 3,000 blood tests for children. This gave Ellen and I lots to talk about.
On a different note, there is a shift evolving to have celiac disease in adults diagnosed from blood tests which show a multiple times above normal reading. This was begun a couple of years ago for children after a study showed it could reduce the number of children having to undergo a biopsy, but recently, it’s being shown that blood tests for adults with “extreme” results, can be used in a similar way. Hopefully this will lead to more simple protocols for diagnosis in the future.
Ellen brings us a question to, and answer from, an advice columnist when asked about a friend who seems obsessively talking about her gluten issues. Are we being boring? How should we deal with friends and family who find our conversations limited and very narrow? As well, what strategies should we use when a friend or family member seems to only talk about their health issues? Lots of food for thought here.
